Samsung Galaxy S4 Review

The expected launch of Samsung Galaxy S4 has been in the rumor mill for a while, and now it is getting more obvious that no other smartphone will be able to topple it this year. The Korean company has clearly gained the muscle and continues to push things beyond customers’ expectations.

PROS

  • Full HD resolution screen
  • Fast and stamina-rich processor
  • Excellent battery life
  • Great camera
  • Smart scrolling feature
  • Ample storage space

CONS

  • Lacks “classy” styling
  • Too many gimmicks
  • Minor UI issues
  • It isn’t a phone for petite hands

Design

The design hasn’t been radically altered which is absolutely understandable – the S3 model proved to have a winning design and Samsung decided to keep it. Still, there are some style improvements. Unlike swirly, curvy lines of the S3 this one has purely straight edges and looks more elegant and serious.
However, it has the same plastic finish and lacks the premium feel of such devices as HTC One.
But it’s the same gloss plastic finish and you might lack the premium feel.

Size and build
This model has not been designed for petite hands. However, the S4 is somehow smaller than its predecessor even though the screen is bigger (height – 136.6mm, width – 69.8mm, and depth – 7.9mm). The depth has been significantly changed which means that although the handset looks big, it’s not difficult to manage.

Unlike most classy devices which feature sealed-in batteries, the S4 has a back that pops off to allow the user to insert a replacement battery when the device runs out of battery life.

Screen
The screen of this model has Full HD resolution screen. No wonder it looks awesome – 455 pixels per inch is more than enough. The same amount of pixels you’d have on an expensive TV-set some years ago is now in your pocket. Although there are other smartphones that boast the same resolution, they still lack the flabbergasting clout of the Super AMOLED HD screen offered here.

Smart Scroll
When you come to the bottom of a web page, it takes just a tilting of the handset and the content will be scrolled up for you. What is cool about smart scroll feature is that you can also get the same result if you simply tip your head. Also, there are more features that allow you to do lots of staff without touching the screen. If you pass your hand near the handset and the screen will wake, revealing the information about missed calls, received emails and messages. If you hover your fingers near a contact in your phone book you’ll see more information without having to open the contact. The pages can be turned by waving your hand.
The sensitivity can reach 11 which means that you can use the smartphone with your gloves on.

Camera
The S4 features 13MP sensors that are also present in the Sony Xperia Z. The camera is equipped with lots of gimmicks and delivers high quality shots and even a child can use it. However, the photos aren’t that fantastic in lower light.

Performance
This smartphone never slows down which is a huge advantage. The touchscreen response times are minimal, web pages load superfast and apps launch in no time at all. The Qualcomm quad-core 1.9GHz chip and the 2GB of RAM deserve much kudos for making this device supersonic and powerful.

This is a 4G device that effectively works on EE which means that it will support the new generation networks. Call quality is exceptional since there is an additional microphone, and the signal strength is great too.

Battery
You shouldn’t fear that the S4 would run out of juice by lunchtime. You can expect it to keep you going through a full day.
The battery life is really great, better than in many other smartphones of this class, though the S4 still cannot rock the Motorola RAZR HD in this respect

Verdict
Samsung’s flagship is a real Wow thing. It looks fantastic and does more than previous models designed by the Korean company have. Although it doesn’t boast the gorgeous style of the HTC One, and its camera it outgunned by the Sony Xperia Z, its power and innovative features make it approach the top three smartphone models.
